
The sleepy town of Lobatse could not have asked for a better New Year present. It is being ushered a state of the art stadium that will make the National stadium
pail in comparison.
This Friday, the government begins the construction of the long awaited stadium, a 25000 seater which will rival the national stadium both in splendor and carrying capacity. The Minister for Sports Youth and Culture, Moeng Pheto will officially perform the ground breaking of the town's first stadium.
Director of the department Sports and Recreation Falcon Sedimo told Gazette Sport that the Lobatse stadium will be different from the rest of the stadiums built in towns such as Molepolole, Serowe, Maun, Masunga, and others, which have the carrying capacity of about 15000.
Sedimo also explained that Government has already awarded the tender for the construction of the stadium to a Chinese company.
The people of Lobatse will have to thank the 2010 world cup in South Africa for the fast tracking of the stadium construction. The fancy looking stadium is intended mainly to entice a European team with a huge following to come and set up camp in Botswana during the course of the World cup 2010.
Government has identified the need for three world-class stadium facilities, with two others, the UB stadium and the National stadium also ear-marked for refurbishment to entice at least three World Cup teams to camp in Gaborone.
